Guernica to Bermeo

 9/28/25

Today is our final day walking, kind of sad yet kind of glad.

As much as I enjoy walking these trails, this one has been a challenge, especially due to my knees, and also misrepresented as being a lot easier and more flat than it is.

Never the less, quite happy to get going and tackle the two climbs that don’t look too bad, but we have been fooled before.

Early start this morning

Grabbed our packs and headed down the hill from our accommodation and into town where as usual, one seeks out the nearest coffee shop for a croissant and shot of caffeine.

Time to put our boots on one more time.

A walk through the old town and I should have known it, once out of the town, the trail went straight up. This was a tough climb for about 1.5 hours, through the undergrowth next to a stream that was crashing its way down and behind us.

And so it begins

We’ve burned so many calories, we,ve become shadows of ourselves

There was the odd rest stop and the view of a few upcountry farms, other than that, the bush blocked the valley below once we reached the top,

Kimberley and I took a break and ate the orange we brought with us, then it was poles out and along steep decent into the village below.

Slowly but surely, one step at a time

Bill and Patty were waiting at a cafe, so we joined then for  coke and something to eat, then decided we were going to forgo the next hill,

I had made it this far and hadn’t hurt myself, but I was getting very tired, and that’s when accdents happen. Bill and Patty headed on up, and we chose to turn towards the estuary, then turned north along its shore and walked towards the ocean. I don’t know if it was any easier.
Taking a break , wishing I could just dive in

Our village tonight, Mundaka

Finally, we walked into Mundaka, the port village where we were staying tonight

What a pretty place

Once the others arrived, we cleaned upo and went down to the port area for some libations and food

Just happy to be here.

This marked the end of the walk for us, I was happy I actually made it, and I think it was good therapy for my knees. I believe they certainly got stronger, one more surgery to go,,,,I pray

A gin and tonic down by the water, some pintxos to snack before walking to dinner in the village

After doing a long hike like this, I like to sit quietly and reflect, see if I learned anything of personal value along the way. I don’t know that anything jumped out at me on this one, but in truth, the walk is never really over.
It now lives on in your mind and memories, and it’s never too late to take something precious away from it.
My favorite times were when I was walking quietly, even next to someone I love, and just let my mind wonder around and do its work,,I believe in this
Like the Dalia Lama said
WHEN YOU TALK, YOUR JUST REPEATING WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW
BUT, IF YOU LISTEN, YOU M,AY LEARN SOMETHING NEW
A wonderful example is the subtle differences in people from different walks of life, that you meet along the way, different nationalities, different religions, and they all get along with each other just fine ,as long as there is no outside interference.
Even the difference in the sexes, for example
IT TAKES 7 SECONDS FOR YOUR FOOD TO PASS FROM YOUR MOUTH TO YOUR STOMACH
A HUMAN HAIR CAN HOLD UP TO 3KG
THE LENGTH OF A MANS PENIS IS THREE TIMES THE LENGHT OF HIS THUMB
THE FEMUR BONE IS AS HARD AS CONCRETE
A WOMANS HEART BEATS FASTER THEN A MANS
WOMAN BLINK 2 TIMES AS MUCH AS A MAN
WE USE 300 MUSCLES JUST TO KEEP OUR BALANCE WHEN STANDING
A WOMAN HAS READ THIS ENTIRE SCRIPT
A MAN IS STILL LOOKING AT HIS THUMB

The walk is over but the trip goes on, tomorrow its off to Bilbao
